It was constructed in 1589 at the expense of Bishop Angelo Cesi, and decorated on the design of Martino Longhi the elder in 1591 with polychrome marbles.
In 1592 the statues of St. Peter and St. Paul were placed in the appropriate niches, the work of Giovanni Antonio Paracca (called il Valsoldo).
