Above the altar four fluted columns, gilt and inlayed with lapis lazuli, which surround a large niche, incrusted with alabaster, lapis lazuli, jasper and gilt bronze. The pedestals of the columns and the base of the niche are of verde antique, richly incrusted with gilt-bronze and marble reliefs illustrating scenes from Loyola's ministry.
