To God best and greatest
The Church of Saint Agatha, Virgin and Martyr, was consecrated in the era of Emperor Constantine the Great, who had expelled and driven away the pagans. It was restored and adorned by the work of Flavius Ricimer and handed over to the Gothic [Arian] heresy. In the year 591 Pope Gregory the Great restored the church to the true [Catholic] faith, for God who shines with celestial richness. For a long time and in the course of its honors the church was under the constant careof the popes of Rome, above all Pope Leo IX and Pope Urban VIII. In 1836 Pope Gregory XVI granted the church with its adjoining buildings and all their rights to the Pontifical Irish College. |
