The floor of the church is one of its glories. It consists of a variety of ancient polychrome stones, mostly marbles, cut in geometric shapes and tessellated. This style can be found on many church floors in Rome (although much has been lost), and is usually known as Cosmatesque after a famous artisan family of the 12th century. The technique of fitting different shapes of colored stone together to make a patterned floor is better known as opus sectile. The style is also known as opus alexandrinum. The name of the original craftsman has been recorded as Magister Paulus.
In the center of the floor is the memorial slab for Cardinal Vincenzo Lauro (1523-1592).
