At the foot of the Crucifix are two deer and six birds at a fountain which is branching into four streams; this is an allusion to the description of the Garden of Eden in Genesis 2, 9-10. The deer are a reference to the first verse of Psalm 43: "Like the deer that yearns for running streams".
