The pedimented doorway on the left with bronze doors leads into the Sancta Sanctorum, but you cannot access the latter this way. There is an ornate relief coat-of-arms of Pope Sixtus V above the triangular pediment. The next arch opening contains the entrance into a little chapel dedicated to St Lawrence. The opening on the right side of the apse leads to the Cappella del Crocifisso (Chapel of the Crucifixion)
