The mosaic occupies the upper part of the far wall, and the conch of the little apse of the sanctuary. It appears to have been made by local artists, influenced by the newly developed Byzantine tradition of iconography. Overall the background is in gold. The wall above it has three windows, a small one above the keystone and two larger ones flanking it. In between the windows are two rectangular mosaic panels, showing the symbols of the four Evangelists, and between the outer windows and the corners are two panels showing the holy cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
