Against the back of the apse is an incredibly ornate Cosmatesque episcopal throne, which stands on five steps themselves having Cosmatesque decoration on the risers. The last step has the epigraph ("This is a papal and pontifical seat"). The throne stands on a white marble plinth with relief decoration of mythological beasts, possibly ancient, and has a ogee arch backdrop which intrudes into the second register of decoration on the apse wall.
