Across the aisle from the door to the Lateran palace is the monument of Pope Alexander III Bandinelli (1159-1181), who celebrated the Third Council of Lateran of 1171 in this church. The tomb was designed by Borromini, with columns made of onyx and yellow Siena marble, sculpture by Domenico Guidi (1658-1659), commissioned by Pope Alexander VII. His original tomb was destroyed by the fire of 1308 or 1361.
