The architecture of the great nave and aisles, as they now stands, is the work of Francesco Borromini, who, in 1650, during the pontificate of Innocent X Pamphilj, built up the thirty ancient granite columns into enormous piers. The piers form five arcades, which correspond with as many side-chapels.
