The first chapel on the left is dedicated to St Gemma Galgani. This young woman (she died at aged twenty-seven) lived at Lucca as a devotee of the Passionist retreat there. She was a stigmatic and underwent extraordinary spiritual experiences. Her canonization took place under the patronage of the Passionists in 1940, in the face of much opposition.
