"Here, where Blessed Paul of the Cross was buried as a guest in his own house, Vincenzo Macchi, from Capodimonte in the Province of Viterbo, who served as a legate among the Lusitanians, Helvetians, and Gauls during very difficult times, wished to be laid to rest.. Leo XII enrolled him in the College of Cardinals. Gregory XVI appointed him Prefect of Emilia. Pius IX ordered that he be present in matters concerning diplomacy and criminal cases against the Church.

The prince of his order, the bishop of Ostia and Veliterna, passed away on the 1st of October in the year 1860, at the age of 90. The wealth that he possessed from the churches was devoted to the service of God and to aiding the poor. Through counsel, vigilance, and care in managing affairs, he ensured that no harm should come to the Christian faith.

He earned a reputation for posterity."
