The fifth chapel was the original side entrance to the church until 1564 when it was reconstructed as a family burial chapel for Alessandro Mattei, dedicated to their patron saint St Matthew. The decoration of this chapel is generally regarded as one of the sources of inspiration for Caravaggio's Contarelli chapel in S. Luigi dei Francesi.
