The stairs leading up to the church are impressive, consisting of 124 wide steps steeply ascending the Capitol hill. It was designed by Lorenzo di Simone Andreozzi in 1348, donated by Giovanni de Colonna as thanksgiving for deliverance from the plague, as is recorded by an inscription affixed to the front of the church to the left of the central door.
