The saint is not shown with the Christ-Child and a lily as is now usual, but with a book and a flaming heart. This alludes to his skill at explaining the Scriptures, and the heart refers to the Walk to Emmaus in the Gospel of Luke (Lk 24:32) where the hearts of the disciples burned within them as Christ explained the Scriptures concerning himself.
