Santa Maria in Aracoeli

Incised slab (nave, under 5th column, left): No date. Gothic letter. Nothing left of the figure but the legs. Of extreme interest, as marking the resting-place of the first muratore, ' master-mason,' Maestro Aldo of the church. Since Araceli passed into the hands of the Franciscans in 1250, and was reconstructed by them, this slab must be placed in the last half of the thirteenth century. It is possibly the earliest in the church.
