The altarpiece fresco depicting the Nativity of the Virgin, was begun by Sebastiano del Piombo using an unusual technique, oil on peperino stone blocks. The painting, which was left unfinished by Sebastiano in 1534, was completed by Francesco Salviati around 1555.
