Set against the last pillar of the south aisle, the tomb of the Genovese cardinal, Giovanni Battista Pallavicino was erected well after his death in 1524 because he was originally buried in the Old St. Peter's Basilica. In 1596 his remains were relocated to Santa Maria del Popolo. Pallavicino was a renowned jurist and the Bishop of Cavaillon. He died prematurely at the age of 44. The inscription states that the memorial was built by his grateful nephews in 1596.
