The series of mosaic panels in the middle level of the apse are the work of Pietro Cavallini, probably made 1290-1291. They form a strip broken by three round-headed windows in the apse, and show scenes from the life of the Blessed Virgin. The first scene from the left is the Birth of Our Lady.
