The altarpiece shows Christ appearing to the St John of the Cross. The painting is by François Nicolas de Bar, who was from Lorraine, France but did extensive work in Rome. The Corinthian columns and pediment of the aedicule are in red and white Sicilian jasper, a stone also used in revetting the walls.
