In the center of the apse wall, behind the altar, is an enormous picture of The Apotheosis of Pope St Marcellus in an arched gilt frame which has Ionic columns. This work takes the place of the altarpiece, and was installed in the mid 19th century restoration when the apse was re-ordered. It is a free copy of a ceiling fresco in the sacristy by Giovanni Battista Ciocchi.
