The sacntuary was redesigned by Clemente Orlandi on the occasion of the arrival of the paintings from San Pietro in Vaticano. The sanctuary is approached by a flight of four steps. At the top of these is a balustraded screen in veined red marble, which is matched by the stonework of the high altar itself. The apse has three windows separated by large decorative brackets.
