On the left wall, nearer to the high altar, is The Baptism of Jesus by Carlo Maratta, painted in 1697 for San Pietro in Vaticano and moved here after his death in 1713. This was one of the first paintings moved here by Pope Benedict XIII. Jesus Christ and St John the Baptist are shown surrounded by angels in a painting of very high quality.
