The chapel was originally dedicated to St. Jerome by the bishop, Girolamo Porzio. Having come under the patronage of the Braschi family, then the Millini family, it was totally modified around 1712, when it was dedicated to St. Pius V, who was canonized that year. The pope is buried in Santa Maria Maggiore, exposed in a crystal coffin.
