The portico was rebuilt in the pontificate of Sixtus IV (1471-1484) by Baccio Pontelli. The upper storey was added in 1578, on the orders of Cardinal Antoine de Granville, to hide the old façade. Under Pope Clement XI (1700-12) there was a redecoration and a provision of guard railings.
