The deserted and swampy Forum area in the years 1566-1572 had been drained, artificially raised and rehabilitated by Pope Pius V's nephew Cardinal Michele Bonelli and that new streets had been laid out (including Via Alessandrina and Via Bonella) and emerged a brand new and populous residential neighborhood on top of the old Emperor Forums.
