The central altar was installed in 1455 by the Florentine artist Bernardo Rossellino, responsible for the 15th century restoration. This is on a raised platform. In 2009 the altar enclosure was provided with a celebrant's chair, a piece of modern sacred art in sheets of beaten and embossed bronze.
