In the lower part of the of the apse, Zucchi painted a large crowd of disciples that includes women in addition to the small group around Mary, awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, the painted architecture that encloses the crowd is an illusionistic extension of the real church, thus drawing the congregation into the scene which appears to take place in a raised choir and ambulatory.
