Many of the ancient churches in Rome have been reconstructed many times over the centuries. Some of the reconstructed churches are on their original foundations, others are completely rebuilt.
I have classified the date of the church by the date the present fabric of the church was constructed.
Also, many of the ancient churches have been redecorated to the point that all of their ancient fabric has been covered over. That was a common practice during the Baroque era. An example of this is Santa Maria Maggiore, an 8th century church that has been thoroughly "Baroquified"
I have included many 20th century churches as their architecture and decoration are interesting and unique.
