Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament
According to tradition, the icon was venerated by St. Alexis when he was in Edessa, and was brought to Rome by Archbishop Sergius of Damascus in the 11th century. According to experts, however, the icon was created by a Roman painter between the 12th and 13th centuries, in tempera on canvas and fixed on a wooden board.
