To the right of the altar is a statue of a kneeling pope, in front of a marble slab embellished with Cosmatesque heraldry. The four shields on the latter are of the Tomacelli family, to which Boniface IX (1389-1404) belonged. The statue has hence been described as portraying him, or Pope Boniface VIII. However, modern opinion is that neither identification is correct and that the statue and slab do not belong together.
