Below the window to the right of the altar is the tomb of Mario Mellini (d. 1673), a distinguished soldier of the Papal State. The monument is attributed to Alessandro Algardi and the bust is attributed to Bernini. The inscription states that the tomb of Mario Mellini was built by his son, Cardinal Savio Mellini "for the best of fathers".
The tomb of Pietro Mellini (d. 1483), founder of the chapel, is located under the 17th century monument of Mario Mellini. The 16th century tomb shows a Tuscan influence. The reposing effigy of the great jurist is by Giovanni Dalmata. The face looks like a trustworthy portraiture and the folds of the drapery are realistic. |
