The Martyrs St Eustachio, Pope Alexander, Symphorosa
and her seven children
The ninth fresco. In the foreground St Eustachio is seen with other martyrs being burned in a bronze statue (A), while Symphorosa is thrown over a cliff in the background (C), where Pope Alexander is beheaded outside a fortified city (B). Symphorosa's 7 children are tormented in different ways (D). The text above is "Tamqua auru in fornace probavit illos. Sap. III". ("He has tested them like gold in a furnace..." Book of Wisdom 3,6). |
