The subject and execution of the frescoes are in accordance with the dictates of the Council of Trent. The cycle begins to the left of the entrance with the
Crucifixion of Jesus Christ, continues with the
Martyrdom of Saint Stephen and the Apostles, and of some saints in chronological order.
Each panel has an explanatory epigraph in Latin and Italian below the image.
Unless otherwise indicated the frescoes are the work of
Niccoló Circignani, with
Matteo da Siena painting the backgrounds.
