The large tympanum is bounded by an archivolt, with angels in the spandrels and containing a niche with a statue of St. John the Baptist. The statue niche is flanked with faces within six wings, which are seraphim. Just below the statue niche is the recess where the reliquary of the Baptist used to be kept.
